gourmet bak choi.
having expensive tastes and a shrinking wallet. I made an executive decision to clamp down on expenses. afterall, didn't i get a comendation at work last year for budgeting and planning expense accounts? yes indeed - this season is the season to watch spending and make wise financial choices.
first step into this project was to look at my fridge. did i really need to buy gourmet guacamole at the deli for 10$? surely i could do away with my italian sparkling water and organically grown raspberries.
in an effort to really eat healthily and be more frugal, i decided what better place to shop for vegetables than toronto's chinatown? after work, i parked and walked around soaking in the myriad of colours and movements of my people. what a poetic moment. a young girl's turning point in her lifestyle and coming back to her roots.
roots. friday afternoon in chinatown is well...chinatown! boxes of fresh vegetables on the street with cardboard signs marked 29cents a pound, 59 cents a pound. little grannies pushing me around and elbowing me for the best batch of bak choi. well it was really fresh and only 29cents a pound. so i threw back my pashmina and tucked my italian leather tote underneath my arms and began selecting my vegetables.
when i arrived at the til - I silently whooped with joy as the total for 2 weeks worth of vegetables came to $2.61. WOOHOO!! what a triumph! well worth the bak choi dance i experienced just moments earlier. i was so proud of myself i ran back to my car and rushed out of the lot. as i exited - i passed my parking stub to the attendant and couldn't help but laugh at my foolishness. while my total vegetable bill came to $2.61, my parking fees came to $4.00.
foiled again!
