I hate twilight.

...and yet...I am obsessively reading the Twilight saga. Shame! How did this happen? How did a 30 year-old married woman get hooked on a teenage vampire+warewolf series??

It all started when PP and I lined up to watch a blockbuster movie (I think it might have been James Bond) and was relieved when I realized that the MONSTER line-up was actually for Twilight-the movie. Hundreds of teenagers were beeming with excitement - and I had not even heard of the movie. Was it a cartoon?

Next, the young ladies in my Youth 1 intrigued me when they were non-stop making twilight references during my class. 1 Corinthians 13 "...learning about love in the Bible made me realize that love is not exactly like the love between Bella and Edward" Who are Bella and Edward?

Not to be looked down upon by a bunch of 13 year-olds for "not being with it", I rented the movie and forced my husband, my sister and her fiance to watch this teeny-bopper movie. And then as the Summer started rolling into gear and I needed reading material as diversion on a long plane ride, I caved and purchased the 4 book saga.

Now, less than a week later - I have gobbled up 3 books out of 4.

The writing is sub-par, the protagonist irritates the hell out of me, the plot is sensationalistic and most of the time foolish...sigh

1) girl is mad-falling in love with a vampire. PUHlease!!
2) vampire carries around girl like a rag doll and controls her freedom for "safety's sake".
3) some vampires are "good". what part of blood-sucker is good? please explain?
4) girl constantly belittles herself and venerates her boyfriend/vampire. no thank you.
5) girl might give up college to become a vampire. idiot.
6) girl has perfectly hot warewolf guy after her and does not go for him. HELLO???
To quote my sister, it is as if the author, was a complete loser in high school and is vicariously re-living those years via these characters.

I hate it and at the same time I like it! URGH.

To regain some self-respect, I need to go on Amazon and purchase some Wharton, Bronte, Sartre...ASAP!

  • Ms Au,

I agree with you completely. Terribly written yet highly addictive. When you're done with the 4th book...I'm almost sure you are since your post.

    Read this -

Midnight Sun - Twilight rewritten in Edward's POV. Definitely more interesting and significantly less whiny.
It is only the first 12 chapters tho. let me know what you think.

    - the other Ms. Au, toronto.
