"Trashing the Beijing Road
Mar 19th 2008 LHASAFrom The Economist print edition
Our Beijing correspondent happened to be in Lhasa as the riots broke out. Here is what he saw
ETHNIC-Chinese shopkeepers in Lhasa's old Tibetan quarter knew better than the security forces that the city had become a tinder-box. As word spread rapidly through the narrow alleyways on March 14th that a crowd was throwing stones at Chinese businesses, they shuttered up their shops and fled. The authorities, caught by surprise, held back as the city was engulfed by its biggest anti-Chinese protests in decades."
I read this article last night before going to sleep and admittedly, it gave me insomnia. It seems like "free tibet" is the phrase du jour. Everyone has an opinion about the matter - and it usually is to FREE TIBET.
Obviously, I also have my own opinion on the matter.
Firstly, I don't think that we are getting an accurate account of what is happening in the western media. Until the article mentioned above, I did not know about the Chinese businessmen suffering losses. Many have lost everything because of the Tibetan riots. Most are poor Hans from the interior of China trying to improve their quality of life and provide futures for their children by setting up small businesses.
Secondly, I am very passionate about the freedom to worship. I don't think that China should stop the Tibetan people group from worshipping - but I question why it bears more importance than the rest of China. No one ever speaks up for the tens of thousands of Christians who are not allowed to practise their faith. The last time I checked, China is a communist country and does not allow for religious freedom - so why is the rest of the world supporting buddhism only? Is it because Tibet is Hollywood's baby?
Finally, no one ever seems to speak out for Spaniards to free the Basques or the Catalans. No one in the world media asks Canada to free Quebec. Why should China bend for domestic matters when the rest of the western world is afforded that type of privacy? No one seemed to take notice that China has seriously invested in Tibet's infrastructure allowing for increase tourism. This tourism has allowed the GDP growth rate to be higher than 12 % for the past 7 years.
It just seems like China has become the whipping-boy of the media. It goes from polluted air to ties in Angola to Tibet...It seems that the journalists never took an economic history course. When Britain went through their industrial revolution, coal soot lined the streets of London. Africa is one of the only countries that will trade with China and China has to meet growing domestic demand (think about it - 1.3 billion mouths to feed...)
I could go on for years.
I just want to leave with the final words that I believe in China. I respect that it improved itself so rapidly. I have hope that it will one day have religious freedom.
